Hazelnuts, dark plums, dark cherries and nutmeg on the nose. It’s medium-bodied, soft and creamy with a touch of roasted nut to add interest to the plummy dark fruit. Drink or hold.

A solid, warmer zone expression. A slick of smart oak, compressing damson, ground musk, lilac and licorice strap. A lilt of sassafras and rosemary to finish. A bit smooth and simple, but certainly not unattractive. Drink now.

The 2018 Aglianico del Taburno shows a dark garnet appearance and thick concentration. The wine is redolent of dried cherry, spice, leather and campfire ash. The nice thing about this wine is that it shows a more traditional approach to the hearty Aglianico grape. Another surprise is the mouthfeel, which is silkier and leaner than expected. Production is 26,000 bottles.

A little strange, with bramble and dark fruit and lots of big and saturated cherry flavors, the 2016 Aglianico del Taburno from Fontanavecchia lacks a little focus. Perhaps this is because there is so much going on at once with no clear direction. Production was about 27,000 bottles.

The 2014 Aglianico del Taburno is a subtle and nicely balanced wine that has been softened by its years in the bottle. This mid-weight wine opens to cherry, dried blackberry and spice. It sees one year in French oak, and there are lighter touches of smoke, cigar box and exotic cedar wood as well. Some 12,000 bottles were made.
