Subtle aromas of red cherries, dried flowers, freshly cut citrus peel and bergamot. Some crushed stone minerality, too. It’s medium-bodied with firm, linear tannins that are finely grained and evenly distributed across the palate. Pure and delicate fruit in the middle with floral and mineral accents. Well made. Firm and vertical. Try after 2027.

The Giacomo Fenocchio 2017 Barolo Bussia shows a bit more grit and intensity compared to some of the other single-vineyard expressions in this portfolio. The wine reveals a pretty garnet color with medium consistency. There are aromas of wild cherry and dried raspberry, with hints of toasted almond and camphor ash. The finish is mild and moderate in intensity although you do feel the tightness of the tannins in this vintage. They make about 25,000 of these bottles per year, which is quite a bit more than your average Barolo cru.

As one of the largest crus in the appellation, Bussia is a vineyard of many faces and many expressions. The 2016 Barolo Bussia is redolent of dark fruit, black cherry and tilled earth. Like the other wines in this flight of new releases, this Barolo is short on the small details and long on the broad-brush aromas. Instead of focus, you get a slightly obscured approach. I'd suggest a pairing with a succulent cut of red meat.

Unlike the other single vineyard-releases from the Fenocchio family this year, the 2014 Barolo Bussia delivers a deeper sense of structure and firmness. The bouquet is also bolder and more opulent with dark fruit aromas backed by spice, tar and autumnal leaf. This wine offers a velvety thick but smooth texture on the palate. It ages in large Slavonian oak for three years.
