Notes of fresh red and dark berries with crushed violets, plum skins and wet stones. Medium- to full-bodied with wide and velvety tannins and a vivid core of fruit in the middle. It’s bright and mouthwatering with a mineral, lightly chewy finish. Very balanced and focused. Try from 2027.

With fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the Giacomo Fenocchio 2017 Barolo Villero reveals a light appearance with lean hues of ruby and garnet. The wine is not especially bold in terms of mouthfeel. In fact, it shows moderate intensity with wild cherry, crushed rose and some earth or dusty mineral. The tannins are also tame. About 5,000 bottles were released.

The rich texture envelops sappy flavors of cherry, licorice, tar and milk chocolate, giving way to dense, pointed tannins as this plays out on the finish. The balance tips toward the tannins, but isn't overly astringent, with lots of saturated fruit in the end. The Villero cru is quickly gaining in prestige and celebrity. The 2016 Barolo Villero raises the bar on this group of new releases from Giacomo Fenocchio. If some of the other Baroli are slightly muddled in aromas, this wine shows a greater degree of focus and precision. You are aware of clear aromas of black fruit, plum, spice, leather and cured tobacco. The tannins are textured but integrated into the rich fiber of this vintage.

A mellow version, this exhibits plum, incense, floral, spice, menthol and tobacco aromas and flavors. Shows a spine of serious tannins, remaining harmonious and long.
