The 2005 Grenache “Gerhard” is sourced from 46- to 50-year-old vines and was aged for 19 months in French oak, 25% new. It delivers scents of garrigue, sage, leather, lavender, black cherry, and black raspberry. Full-bodied, sweet and layered on the palate, the wine has tons of savory fruit, a smooth texture, excellent depth and length, and a long, pure finish. It has enough stuffing to develop for 4-6 years in the cellar, but can be enjoyed now. Congratulation to young Mr. Tscharke for an impressive collection of wines!Glaymond’s owner/winemaker is Damien Tscharke (whose namesake winery is reviewed in this report) with winemaking consultation from superstar Chris Ringland. The vineyards are owned by the Tscharke family which had previously sold the fruit to larger producers. The vines are in a tenderloin portion of the Barossa for growing top-class Shiraz. From 40-year-old vines and aged in 2-year-old French hogsheads (about 300 liters), the 2004 and 2005 Grenache Gerhard exhibit an interesting contrast in styles. The 2004 possesses classic kirsch liqueur, licorice, and resiny characteristics in its medium to full-bodied, soft, plush style. It is bottled unfiltered. The 2003 Grenache Gerhard, which could pass for an Australian version of the eminent Henri Bonneau’s Reserve des Celestins Chateauneuf du Pape, comes from 41-year-old vines. It is an enormously full-bodied, powerful offering with head-spinning levels of alcohol as well as a fascinating perfume of new saddle leather, plums, figs, cherry liqueur, melted licorice, roasted meats, and dried herbs. This huge, savory, fleshy, soft, velvety-textured red is a terrific expression of old vine Grenache. While it may be controversial, for true hedonists, it will be a wine of exquisite pleasure.
