The 2009 Blauburgunder Mazzon (Pinot Noir) opens with an expressive burst of sweet red fruit, herbs, tobacco and licorice. This is a fairly structured, authoritative Pinot with excellent definition and length; it just needs time in the glass for all of the elements to come together. The 2008 Blauburgunder Mazzon (Pinot Noir) is a super-classy wine laced with sweet red cherries, flowers, spices and mint. There is something utterly beguiling about the 2008 that make it very hard to put down the glass despite the wine’s understated and at times reticent personality. This is a great showing from Gottardi. I can’t help noting that this bottle is far more impressive than the bottle I tasted last year. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. The 2007 Pinot Nero shows good varietal character in sweet cherries, smoke, flowers and spices that come together on an ethereal, mid-weight frame. There’s a lot going on in the glass thanks to penetrating aromas of red fruit, smoky toast and white chocolate. Although the nose in intense, it’s a bit awkward with a few thorny spots along the way.
