The 2006 “23 BARRICAS,” a blend of the 23 best casks of Syrah and Touriga Nacional, is rather marked by oak at the moment, with heavy notes of licorice and vanilla on the finish, although it spent only 12 months in French oak. It seems fairly short and relatively simple compared to the 2005, but the fruit is modestly persistent and tasty. The structure is modest as well. It seems very approachable now. Drink now-2014. This winery near Beja includes a beautiful resort facility. It also features, more pertinently, Luis Duarte, the well regarded winemaker/consultant who also works with Quinta do Mouro and Malhadinha Nova. Although at most wineries the 2004s shine, here the 2005s seem to be the pick of the litter to me.Importers: Vinum Importing, Redmond, WA; tel. (206) 621-8843; Barterhouse, New York, N.Y.; tel.
