A year in, year out killer wine, the 2014 Syrah Nuts and Bolts is another stunner that gives up ripe, full throttle notes of blackberries, peppered meats, game and singed leather. Big, rich, gorgeously textured and hedonistic, yet also balanced, pure and fresh, it's a quintessential Paso Robles red that delivers the goods. Drink it anytime over the coming 5-8 years.

A wine that stood out in my Paso Robles tasting was the 2013 Syrah Nuts and Bolts. Made from 100% Syrah that saw 16 months in 70% new French oak, it's the greatest vintage of this cuvee I've tasted and it offers off the hook notes of creme de cassis, melted licorice, caramelized meats, pepper and crushed flowers. Full-bodied, voluptuous and hedonistic, it's also seamless and balanced, with ultra-fine tannin, no hard edges and blockbuster length. As winemaker Russell From says, "It is a no holds barred expression of Syrah that chases flavor at nearly any cost." Bravo sir. Give this sensational Paso Syrah a year or so in the cellar and enjoy bottles through 2023.

Even better, his 2012 Nuts & Bolts is a smoking 100% Syrah that spent 16 months in 50% new French oak barrels. Full-bodied and decadent, yet never over-the-top, heady or cumbersome, it’s loaded with ripe blackberry, cassis, new leather, white pepper and hints of smoked duck. Drink this hedonistic beauty over the coming 4-6 years, although I see no reason to delay gratification either. I loved these latest releases from winemaker Russell From. His 2011s are excellent in the vintage, with slightly toned down, elegant profiles that stay focused and tight on the palate. Deep, black-fruited and layered, the 2011 Nuts & Bolts is 100% Syrah that was harvest from the middle to end of November. Aged in 55% new French oak for 16 months, it delivers a seamless, silky profile with rich, full aromatics (cassis, barbecued meat, exotic spices) full-bodied richness, good acidity and a lengthy, pure finish that highlights finely polished tannin. As with the Grenache On the Road, it’s a slightly lighter, fresher version of this cuvee. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years. Drink now-2018. Russell From continues to release a bevy of smoking wines under his Herman Story label. His wines never lack for fruit or texture, yet to me, always stay beautifully balanced and downright thrilling to drink. The 2010 Nuts and Bolts possesses gorgeous depth, but the aromatics aren’t as delineated as I had hoped. Blackberry jam, graphite, tar and licorice flesh out on the deep finish. The 2010 is 100% Syrah aged in French oak barrels, 55% new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. Russell From’s wines are both inspiring and frustrating. They often boast impeccable textural elegance and purity, but at the same time the high alcohol (at times in excess of 16%) comes through, especially as the wines sit in the glass.
