The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a striking wine endowed with considerable finesse and sheer personality. Black cherries, plums, flowers, licorice and tobacco are some of the notes that flesh out in the glass. The Reserve shows gorgeous inner perfume, beautifully integrated tannins and fabulous overall balance. It is a striking wine that should drink well with minimal cellaring. A more limited production offering, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is composed of 80% estate Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% estate Cabernet Franc. Sadly, only 270 cases were produced. Possibly one of the finest wines Michael Keenan has yet made, it has just about everything one could desire in a Cabernet Sauvignon, including good minerality, floral, red, black and blue fruit notes, great equilibrium, stunning concentration and length, and an overall sense of purity and personality. The more limited production offerings include the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (700 cases produced). Its opaque purple color is followed by a big, layered mouthfeel with intense richness suggestive of creme de cassis, charcoal, tobacco leaf, and hints of truffles and asphalt. Full-bodied with excellent precision as well as freshness, this complex effort requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 25+ years. As I have written in the past, Michael Keenan has done a fabulous job of ratcheting up the quality of the wines from this Spring Mountain estate.
