The 2006 Vin de Pays de Gard reveals plenty of Grenache characteristics in its sweet cherry, pepper, and spice-scented nose. With luscious fruit, medium body, and an easy-going style, this good bistro-styled red can be drunk now and over the next 2-3 years. The 2000 Cuvee des Galets (2,000 cases) is a tank-fermented and aged blend of equal parts Carignan and Grenache. It possesses plenty of berry fruit, pepper, and earth notes presented in a user-friendly, supple, medium-bodied, lusty format. This tasty cuvee from Estezargues, one of the best run cooperatives in southern France, is a noteworthy value. The 1998 Cuvee des Galets (made from 80% Grenache and the remainder a field blend of Carignan and other varietals) is a 1,500 case lot that reveals the delicious ripeness and sweet fruit obtained in this vintage. It is one of the finest generic French wines I have ever tasted. The dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by aromas of jammy cherries, pepper, and garrigue.
