Hiedler served me a wine produced by his father, the 1969 Gruner Veltliner Thal Spatlese. Prior to 1971, Austria used the German wine laws and even though this wine is dry it must carry the Spatlese - or "late harvest" - designation due to the ripeness of the fruit at harvest. It sports a youthful greenish straw color as well as a superb nose of honeyed cedar and black pepper. This offering's flavor profile is reminiscent of a Riesling, revealing stones, minerals, herbal teas, and dried honey. It has perfect balance, a lovely creamy texture, and superb grip. This bone dry wine has aged remarkable for 33 years and remains young. . . it should easily last for another 10.
