A blend of equal parts Aglianico and Piedirosso, the Marisa Cuomo 2018 Costa d'Amalfi Furore Rosso Riserva marks one of two important growing sites for this enterprising estate. They are Furore and Ravello. Furore is further west on the Sorrentine Peninsula, and there is an abandoned fishing village stuffed at the bottom of a tiny inlet in the folds of the cliffs that come crashing down to the coast. (I suggest you Google a picture of "Furore, Italy" if you haven't seen it in person). Vineyards for this wine are located high above the abandoned village in a direct vertical line 550 meters above sea level. With 9,100 bottles made, this oak-aged red wine is elegant and tightly coiled with black berry fruit, blue flower, wild rose, grilled rosemary and crushed limestone rock. The mouthfeel is not quite full-bodied, and there is enough latitude and freshness here to pair with a grilled salmon or tuna steak.

Wines from Marisa Cuomo enjoy cult status in Italy, and it's easy to see why. The 2015 Costa d'Amalfi Furore Riserva, for example, is an exuberant and rich blend of Piedirosso and Aglianico that reveals deep inner power, although the wine never feels too rich or heavy. The key is that acidity that has remained intact even in a hot vintage like this. Cliff-hanging vineyards on the Amalfi Coast benefit from sea breezes and steep diurnal temperature shifts. I found this vintage to be especially delicious with a very rich an opulent level of blackberry fruit followed by integrated spice and Mediterranean herb. You definitely taste that salinity from the beachfront exposure of the vines. Softer tones of chocolate and tobacco fill in the back. This is the best vintage of Furore I have tasted. Some 5,800 bottles were produced.

The Marisa Cuomo estate includes 25 hectares of vines planted on near-vertical terraces overlooking the azure sea. The 2014 Costa d'Amalfi Furore Riserva is a blend of Aglianico and Piedirosso in equal measure. This is a lovely red wine with soft textural richness and generous fruit aromas of black cherry, cassis and plum. There is a touch of cherry liqueur or candied cherry covered in dark chocolate. Of course, the best part of the bouquet are those saline marine notes that give the wine an important sense of place. Only 5,800 bottles were made.

A equal blend of Aglianico and Piedirosso, the 2012 Costa d'Amalfi Furore Riserva is an elegantly stitched together and seamless wine. This beautiful expression does a great job of presenting red berry aromas of cherry and blackberry that are contrasted against marine notes of salt and white mineral. These diverse characteristics flow together in unison. The wine's appearance is glossy and darkly saturated, and the mouthfeel is powered by firm structure, rich concentration and spicy oak. This wine should continue to evolve for the better part of a decade.

The 2010 Costa d'Amalfi Furore Rosso Riserva is a blend of Piedirosso and Aglianico from the white stone, Dolomite soils of the Amalfi Coast. This beautiful wine ages in oak for 12 months but you'd hardly know. The bouquet is beautifully redolent of dark fruit, blackberry, dried cherry and crushed black pepper. It shows medium weight and an enormously mineral-driven personality with granite and flint in evident doses. The wine is young and still timid. Give it a few more years to open. This is a gorgeous red wine that reflects the spectacular beauty of the Amalfi Coast.
