The 2008 Petit Verdot "Ravasqueira Flavours" is one of the premium wines here, selling for a pretty penny. Other than its difficult price point, though, it is an interesting wine and a nice performance for a Southern Portuguese Petit Verdot. Aged for 1 year in French oak, it seems to have a overlay of a bit of licorice and not much of the herbaceous nuance for which Petit Verdot is known. Perhaps that will change as it ages. That said, it is nicely constructed and focused, with a bright feel to it and good depth. Ultimately, it left me just a little unconvinced, as it tightened and became a touch hard and a little harsh on the finish. The winery recommends drinking it within 6-8 years; I think it could last a bit longer. Drink now-2018. The consulting oenologist here is Rui Reguina, well known in the region for various projects, including his own Terrenus. Also note that, as with many Portuguese wineries, the brand often takes great precedence over the producer name - or even the main brand. On the Calantica, Ravasqueira will be in tiny print only on the back. While most of the wines display Ravasqueira prominently somewhere, also note that the formal corporate name is S.A. Diniz. On the winery's advice, everything is listed here under Ravasqueira.Importer: Well Oiled Wine Company, Leesburg, VA; tel. (703) 771-7090
