Here is Grenache like you've never tasted it. The 2010 Kupra offers a fascinating portrait of this Rh?ne Valley protagonist. Here in the Marche (Central Italy) - and thanks to the signature style of Oasi degli Angeli - the grape shows a denser and sweeter personality than you might get elsewhere. Those variety-specific aromas of wild berry, tin can and licorice powder are in full swing. But the intensity is taken up a notch or two. The ensemble is delicate and complex with moist earth, crushed granite and Indian spice. The finish is super silky and smooth. The wine is fermented in cement vat and aged in oak for 30 months.

The 2009 Marche Rosso Kupra (Grenache) boasts serious structure, power and depth. Firm tannins frame expressive red cherries, tobacco, menthol licorice and anise in a wine that seems to be more about regional rather than varietal expression. Deceptively medium in body, the Kupra packs a serious punch. At the same time, there is an element of graininess in the tannin that is a bit distracting. The 2008 Marche Rosso Kupra offers up sweet red cherries, medicinal herbs and spices. It is a decidedly fleeting wine devoid of any real palate presence or length. Harsh, green tannins mark the strident finish. This is a hugely disappointing wine from Oasi degli Angeli made even more so by a price that is completely out of touch with reality. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. Oasi degli Angeli is one of Italy's most ambitious wineries. Over the years proprietors Eleonora Rossi and Marco Casolanetti have fashioned some of the country's most fascinating reds. Prices have climbed along the way, culminating with the release of a new wine, Kupra, last year at an eye-popping $350 a bottle. Understandably, no one wants to be underpaid for the results of their hard work, but such a pricing strategy creates a very high bar with no safety net. When a difficult vintage like 2008 comes along, well, the results can be devastating. Sweet candied cherries, subtle herbs and spices are some of the notes that emerge seamlessly from the 2006 Kupra. Deceptively medium in body, the wine reveals gorgeous inner sweetness with surprising richness that develops in the glass. High-toned, floral aromatics add complexity on the eternal finish. This is a decidedly intense style of Grenache. The alcohol is at times on the edge of protruding, but there is just enough of everything else to add balance. The 2006 Kupra is one of the most unique and original wines I have tasted this year. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026. These are two exceptional wines from proprietors Marco Casolanetti and Elenora Rossi. Oasi degli Angeli has long set a benchmark for Montepulciano with Kurni, an intense, full-throttle red produced from partially dried grapes. This year the estate has a new wine, Kupra, a Grenache made from a densely-planted vineyard that pushes the boundaries of what can be done with viticulture.
