The outstanding 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Chasse-Temps is a blend of tank-aged Grenache (70%) and Mourvedre (30%). This wine is less animal than it was last year, revealing plenty of sweet kirsch liqueur, raspberry, licorice, smoke, herb, and roasted meat notes. Dense, full-bodied, moderately tannic, and in need of 2-3 years of bottle age, it is a real vin de garde and should keep 10-15 years. This was my debut tasting of the 500-case cuvee of 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Chasse-Temps (from a vineyard near the renowned Chateau Beaucastel). A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre aged completely in neutral wood foudres, its dense purple color is followed by aromas of roasted meats, saddle leather, animal fur, blackberries, and cherry liqueur. Rich, structured, and full-bodied, it may be controversial as there is an element of brett in the aromatics (or is that just the Mourvedre component?). In any event, it should be cellared for 1-3 years, and drunk over the following 10-12.
