An expensive Cotes du Rhone is the 2000 Aurore. Made primarily from old vine Grenache (95%) (1,500 cases produced), from a vineyard abutting Chateauneuf du Pape, this exceptional effort is further evidence of the amazing bargains that exist in this section of France. It could easily pass for a Chateauneuf du Pape. Aromas of kirsch liqueur, garrigue, meat, and licorice are followed by a seriously-endowed, supple-textured Cotes du Rhone with a surprisingly long finish. Consume it over the next 5-6 years. The 1999 Cotes du Rhone Aurore, from 80-year old Grenache vines (95%) and Syrah (5%), all kept in tank and bottled without fining or filtration, is a terrific expression of Grenache. A dark ruby color is followed by a wine reminiscent of a big, lusty, full-bodied Chateauneuf du Pape. Intense, pure notes of kirsch liqueur, spice, and pepper are followed by a surprisingly rich wine exhibiting raspberry flavors on the palate. The wine's low acidity, high glycerin levels, and decadent personality suggest drinking it over the next 2-3 years, but I would not be surprised to see it last even longer.
