The 1999 Cotes du Rhone Aurore, from 80-year old Grenache vines (95%) and Syrah (5%), all kept in tank and bottled without fining or filtration, is a terrific expression of Grenache. A dark ruby color is followed by a wine reminiscent of a big, lusty, full-bodied Chateauneuf du Pape. Intense, pure notes of kirsch liqueur, spice, and pepper are followed by a surprisingly rich wine exhibiting raspberry flavors on the palate. The wine's low acidity, high glycerin levels, and decadent personality suggest drinking it over the next 2-3 years, but I would not be surprised to see it last even longer. This is a wine to buy by the case! A Patrick Lesec Selection, various American importers, including Adventures in Wine, Daly City, CA; tel. (415) 467-0140, Atlantic Importing Co., Newton, MA; tel.
