Patrick Lesec directs/assists in the production of two cuvees of Chateauneuf du Pape. The 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Garrigues is very Provencal in its character. Peppery and spicy, with intense herbes de Provence aromatics, the wine exhibits meaty, smoky, grilled vegetable-like flavors with plenty of juicy, cherry fruit. Extremely evolved (it is already revealing some amber at the edge), this fragrant, smooth, round, medium to full-bodied wine should be drunk over the next 5-6 years. I did not see a 1996 cuvee of this wine. Patrick Lesec continues to build his portfolio of handcrafted wines, buying specific cuvees from producers, and having them (1) bottled with low levels of SO2, and (2) usually without any aroma, flavor, and texture-stripping fining and filtration. This wine is a well-made, textbook example. Patrick Lesec Selections (Paris fax # 011 33 1 42843822), various American importers.
