The 2003 Gigondas Les Blaches is a foudre and tank-aged blend of 90% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvedre. Soft, seductive, and medium to full-bodied, with loads of fruit, it is a stylish, elegant Gigondas with a character reminiscent of Pinot Noir. Tank-fermented and aged, the outstanding 2001 Gigondas Les Blaches is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. With more layers, body, and opulence than l’Estale, it possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as a rich perfume of melted licorice, creme de cassis, and flowers. Dense, pure, and ripe with sweet tannin, it is a seductive Gigondas to consume over the next 10-12 years. Lesec, never one to make things simple, produces multiple cuvees of Gigondas. The 2000 Gigondas Les Blaches was kept entirely in tank, with no exposure to either smaller barrels or larger wood foudres. It is pure black cherries, medium-bodied, and more of a near-term Gigondas to drink during its first 8-9 years of life. I liked its purity and sensual qualitites, something Gigondas sometimes lacks.
