The 2010 Branco “Simply” is a blend of Antao Vaz, Arinto and Roupeiro, fermented in tank. This is quite solid and persistent for this modest price range. Focused and pure but for a bit of a flinty, smokey nuance, particularly in the early going, it is a pretty nice buy. It holds in the glass and lingers nicely on the finish. It is quite lovely in most respects. The winery says this can drink well up to 5 years and they may well be right considering how well this is constructed, although it is not quite as clear whether it will improve much, if at all, as it drinks quite well now. I’d be a bit conservative, and perhaps the flinty nuances will moderate in time as well. It is a very nice value. Drink now-2014. Winemaker Paulo Laureano is no stranger to these reports, of course, but these wines are the first of these brands reviewed. Tasting through them in the USA, I found them overall to be very well done, the one caveat being the pricing on the upper level wines. At the other extreme, the entry level Branco is a nice deal.Importer: The Artisan Collection, New York, NY; tel. (212) 608-0722.
