The 2004 NOVUS is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. It is rich, ripe and lush, with a rather creamy texture. It has a certain Beaujolais feel to it at first, although far more depth. It is tasty and succulent, with distinctive flavors that seem to emphasize the Touriga Nacional initially. As a reasonably priced entrant here, it is an excellent deal in an early maturing wine. It is quite accessible now, and not likely to develop much complexity with cellaring, although it will hold awhile and has some light tannins. Confounding its simple, early presentation, I liked this more and more as it evolved, and came to appreciate its juicy, flavorful fruit. It’s just fun. The nose is also pungent and very attractive.
