The Salvatore Molettieri 2016 Irpinia Aglianico Cinque Querce opens to a dark garnet appearance with aromas of dried fruit and cherry, followed by savory tones of leather and tobacco. The effect is genuine and straightforward, and this producer offers another food-friendly Aglianico to pair with a simple pasta or pizza.

The 2014 Irpinia Aglianico Cinque Querce is a steady and fruit-forward red wine to pair with grilled pork chops or meatloaf. Showing simple but solid lines, the wine offers deep fruit flavors, structure and acidity, all with careful balance. This vintage is perhaps leaner and more streamlined in approach. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged in barrique for two years. Some 20,708 bottles were made.

The 2012 Irpinia Aglianico Cinque Querce would make a good pairing partner to pork roll stuffed with garlic and sage. This is a juicy and succulent red wine with bright aromas of dried cherry, leather and cured meat. The wine's personality it slightly wild and untamed, but it ultimately delivers balance on the finish.

The 2010 Irpinia Aglianico Cinque Querce shows a surprisingly floral side of Aglianico with lingering tones of pressed violets, rose and dried potpourri. Those fragrant tones are followed by a ripe quality of fruit that comes off as plump cherry and blackberry jam. You also get ethereal tones of ash and smoke that are so characteristic of this mighty native grape from Campania. Sweet spice, cola and clove give the wine momentum in the mouth.

The 2008 Irpinia Aglianico Vigna Cinque Querce is an elegant, silky red. Molettieri has tamed some of the wildness of Aglianico without losing varietal expressiveness. Perfumed black cherries and dark raspberries come to life in this finessed, supple Aglianico. Texturally, this Cinque Querce is deceptively medium in body this year, but it has plenty of underlying depth. It is a terrific bottle for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018. Molettieri can be counted on for rich, stylish wines that capture the essence of Aglianico. The wines have improved dramatically here in recent years.
