Pale to medium ruby, the 2016 Grenache Pickpocket gives aromas of Bing cherries, pipe tobacco, tar, dried herbs and white pepper with powdered strawberry, candied cherry, rhubarb and dried leaves. Light to medium-bodied, it gives up bright, candied red fruits with citrusy accents in the mouth, chewy tannins and very bright/tart acidity, finishing warm.

The 2015 Grenache Pickpocket is quite evolved, with a rusty rim and notes of candied peel, red berries and thyme. On the palate, it's supple and open-knit on the attack but becomes quite dry and grippy—whether because of stem tannin or wood tannin, I'm not sure. In any case, it isn't my favorite of these releases.

The ripe, yet open knit and evolved 2013 Grenache Pickpocket (100% Grenache) gives up classic Grenache notes of kirsch, blackberries, cured meats and mulled spices in a full-bodied, textured style. There’s a firm edge to the tannin, so give bottles 6-12 months in the cellar, and drink through 2021.

A touch of dry tannin was my only complaint with the 2012 Grenache Pickpocket, but I suspect this will integrate with short-term cellaring. Giving up pretty kirsch, licorice, dried earth and pepper, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a silky texture and a good finish that firms up with ample tannin. Made from 100% Grenache and fermented with 20% whole cluster, it spent 22 months in 51% second-fill barrels.Give bottles 6-12 months, at which point if the tannin still dominates, I'd suggest drinking up.

Giving up more pepper, herbs and crushed rock, the 2011 Grenache Pickpocket has a core of kirsch, baking chocolate and graphite-like aromas and flavors. Made with 5% Mourvedre and aged 22 months in 7% new French oak (the balance is neutral puncheons and barriques), it too is a full-bodied, rich, textured and flavor-filled effort to enjoy over the coming 2-4 years.
