Made only in stainless steel, the Sottimano 2020 Dolcetto d’Alba Bric del Salto offers punchy and raw notes with terrific primary intensity. It is redolent of black cherry and Japanese plum with bitter almond and dried mint. Dolcetto is such a terrific wine for informal occasions involving a loaf of freshly baked sourdough bread with Italian cheeses and cold cuts. This wine represents a blend of fruit from S. Cristoforo, Basarin and Cottá. Some 10,0000 bottles were released.

The well-priced Sottimano 2018 Dolcetto d’Alba Bric del Salto opens to a lean appearance with a light garnet color. This comes as a surprise, as Dolcetto tends to delivers much darker colors and richer saturation. The Sottimano house style embraces elegance, grace and fragility. These goals are achieved effortlessly here, and again, the big surprise is that the exuberant and freewheeling intensity of the Dolcetto grape can be harnessed so effectively to reveal understated aromas of wild cherry, crushed stone and balsam herb. I recommend you buy this wine by the case, not the bottle. This is a lot of fun at low cost.

The 25 days of maceration that the 2017 Dolcetto d’Alba Bric del Salto undergoes would be considered long by most standards, and as a result, the aromas are very pronounced. The fruit is delicate, and the mineral notes come out very strongly here. It is almost crunchy in terms of mouthfeel. This was a hot year, but you’d never know it with this wine because it has an oddly cool-climate personality. It's very floral and delicate on the nose with notes of blossoming rose. There is a refined or, you might say, even traditional side to this wine that you don’t often see in its peers. Some 14,000 bottles were made. It's one of those subdued, floral and flinty light reds that would pair perfectly with a roast chicken sprinkled with rosemary and squeezed lemon.

The 2009 Dolcetto d’Alba Bric del Salto flows effortlessly from the glass with rich layers of dark, varietal fruit. Soft and enveloping on the palate, the Bric del Salto impresses for its balance, finesse and persistent, crystalline finish. Year in year out, this is one of the most delicious Dolcetti to emerge from Piedmont, as it is again in 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012. Sottimano’s 2007 Barbareschi have been impressive every time I have tasted them, starting from barrel a few years ago, to two tastings from bottle in recent months.
