Offering richness and extra substance, the 2017 Alto Adige Pinot Nero Riserva Passion shows a heavier gait and broader shoulders in this hot vintage. You definitely recognize the purity of the grape, with those fragrant aromas of wild berry, blue flower and candied orange peel. But the wine moves slightly toward the dark, thicker and more concentrated side of the Pinot Nero spectrum. This vintage is more accessible and ready to drink straight out of the gate. Only 8,000 bottles were made.

The 2016 Alto Adige Pinot Nero Riserva Passion opens to a dark and saturated color that is atypical for this grape. That darker tonality has been fixed by the steep diurnal shifts between day and nighttime temperatures during the last stage of the growing season. The wine is extremely pure in terms of its varietal flavors, with blueberry, dried violets and sweet almond. Some 10,000 bottles were made.

St. Pauls shows a deft hand with Pinot Nero. The 2013 Alto Adige Pinot Nero Riserva Passion is enormously rich and profound. The winery takes a determined and modern approach to the Burgundian variety and offers a twofold delivery of bright fruit and spice. On the fruit side, you get cherry, cassis and dried raspberry. In terms of spice, the wine offers balsam herb, licorice and softer layers of vanilla at the back. Candied fruit, violets and sweet almond leave a lasting impression. The wine promises a slow aging evolution given the bright intensity it offers in its current state.

The 2010 Alto Adige Pinot Nero Riserva Passion is an exceptional wine and one of my top picks from the vintage. The bouquet shows a long and continuous evolution starting with peppermint and menthol nuances and then moving steadily to red berry and cassis. Fruit and floral tones morph into heavier notes of balsam spice, leather, tar and black licorice. The wine boasts impressive textural finesse with silky, fine tannins and a long, menthol finish. This is a delightful Italian Pinot Nero.
