The Tenuta Cavalier Pepe 2015 Taurasi Riserva La Loggia del Cavaliere (with a metal plaque affixed to the front of the bottle) is a saturated and rich red wine with some mild age on it. The bouquet is quite unique with the expected black fruit and dried blackberry that are followed by unexpected tones of spearmint, white pepper, medicinal herb, clove and sweet basil leaf. You could probably rattle off even more off-the-cuff descriptors. Those various high notes eventually find good balance in this wine. Production is 6,000 bottles.

This is Tenuta Cavalier Pepe‘s flagship wine. The 2014 Taurasi Riserva La Loggia del Cavaliere is smoky and tarry on first nose with dark fruit and prune that has already started to fade at the back. This is a robust, full-bodied rendition from a cool and soggy vintage that will be remembered for thin and more delicate wines. This Riserva is anything but thin and delicate. Instead, it shows the power and thickness of an aged Taurasi. Only 3,000 bottles were produced and I wouldn’t suggest waiting much longer before drinking this wine.

There is good freshness and balance to the Tenuta Cavalier Pepe 2013 Taurasi Riserva La Loggia del Cavaliere and lots of cherry intensity too. This Aglianico spends 24 months in oak, so you can also count on generous tones of spice, tar and cured leather. Fruit comes from 40-year-old vines in the Carazita and Luogosano areas of the Taurasi appellation. Some 3,000 bottles were made.

The 2009 Taurasi Riserva La Loggia del Cavaliere is conceived as an important wine, and you are immediately made aware of its headline status. The winemaking style employed here is contemporary and extracted with modern touches of barbecue smoke, Indian cardamom, cigar box and black fruit. Those fruity elements come off as sweet raisin, prune and dark plum. The wine is softly textured in the mouth with espresso and dark chocolate flavors. The oak is loosely integrated, and it is hard to believe it ever will completely fade into the background.
