A pure expression of Aglianico, the Tenuta Cavalier Pepe 2017 Appio is dedicated to the ancient Roman road Via Appia Antica that famously links the Eternal City to the Italian south. Closed with a wax capsule, the wine opens to a deep garnet color and thick concentration. I tasted bottle 239 of 1,910 numbered bottles produced. The wine's ample density is layered with dark fruit, spice, cured leather and sweet cherry. You will notice the firm tannins. The wine's thickness hints at hot vintage conditions, yet the fruit is never jammy or heavy. Fermentation and aging are completed in clay amphorae, with aging in these clay vessels lasting two years.
