A blend of fruit from Sottocastello di Novello, Cerviano Merli, Perno, Cannubi and Preda, the Virna 2016 Barolo Riserva is a limited production of 6,000 bottles. Only made in the best vintages, the wine already shows the extra finesse and complexity that comes with those extra few years of bottle age. There are silky tones of dried currant, crushed stone, blue flower and earthy truffle over a tight, streamlined mouthfeel.

Virna's 2010 Barolo Riserva is another excellent wine from this historic producer. There is more meat on these proverbial bones. The wine opens to a dark and more saturated color with thick aromas of dried fruit, blackberry, cola, spice, tar and leather. In terms of style, this Riserva opts for added concentration and grit at the back. It should hold steady for the next decade or more.

Dense, smooth and polished, delivering flavors of black currant, cherry, underbrush, licorice and tobacco. Offers a brilliant mix of fruity and savory elements, with terrific balance and the structure to develop. Fine length. Here's a robust and opulent expression from a warm and generous vintage. The 2007 Barolo Riserva shows a dark and savory quality of fruit that is promptly followed by exotic spice, saddle leather, black pepper, cola and grilled herb. There is a note of ripeness that is evident in the bold fruit on display here. That ripeness comes forth as dried cherry skin. Otherwise, the wine has aged well and should continue on this steady trajectory. This Riserva will appeal to those who like more chewiness and richness in their Barolo.

This is decadent, with strawberry jam and rose water aromas. Full-bodied and very soft, with pretty, rich fruit and a long, creamy finish. A fruit-forward style. Almost ready to drink.
