Tarry nose with graphite, ripe cherries, nutmeg, licorice and orange rind. Fine, dusty tannins on the palate with medium to full body and a long, savory finish. Some nice dried fruit and citrus at the end. Characterful. Drink from 2026.

Lovely fruit on the nose with strawberry and raspberry aromas combined with cocoa and cedar. It’s full- to medium-bodied with fine and linear tannins that take you deep into the wine. Racy. Needs five years minimum to open and show its true potential. Drink after 2027.

The Virna 2019 Barolo Cannubi reveals that special softness or silkiness that always comes from this celebrated cru site, especially when made in deft hands. This wine is distinguished by a peppery note that you don't always get but that adds so much extra dimension and complexity to this wine. It otherwise shows dark currant, spice and campfire ash. The vines are now 40 years old on Sant'Agata marl soils rich in fossils. Winemaking sees a brief 10-12 days of fermentation with délestage for softer cap management, and it ages in tonneaux for 18 months. Only 6,000 bottles were made. This vintage comes out like gangbusters. It is very beautiful and nuanced.

The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is silky and fine with light tones of wild berry, blackcurrant, earth, spice and licorice. It shows the most elegant aromas associated with Nebbiolo, especially from the prized Cannubi vineyard with loose sandy soils (or Sant'Agata marl with fossils) that always lead to texturally delicate and complex wines. Fruit comes from a 1.3-hectare parcel with 40-year-old vines. Production is 6,000 bottles.

The Virna 2017 Barolo Cannubi is delicate, fine and ultimately defies your expectations of this hot and dry vintage. The wine reveals elegant tones of wild berry, crushed rose, anise, tar, smoke and a spicy touch of licorice. It sports a lean and lightweight fabric that glides slowly and smoothly over the palate. This vintage shows a little less intensity and a more accessible disposition compared to recent past editions. Some 6,000 bottles were produced.
