The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva opens with an attractive, plump fruit, but then the French oak becomes dominant on the mid-palate. Flowers, sweet spices and licorice wrap around the finish. The Riserva is 100% Sangiovese that spent two years in oak, part in cask and part in smaller French oak barrels. In my opinion, the oak is overwhelming here. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021.
