The 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape reveals some toasty vanillin in the nose, as if a few new barrels have made their way into the Melia cellars. The wine exhibits an impressively saturated ruby/purple color, and a terrific nose of black-cherries and raspberries, combined with toasty notes from the new wood. It is a deep, rich, full-bodied wine with outstanding delineation and terrific purity. Once again, excellent winemaking plus high quality raw materials have been translated into something special. Melia appears to have the ability to obtain considerable richness, but also keep his flavors well-focused and pure, without them becoming overweight or too extracted. This wine was tasted between June 1 and June 16, 1996.Charles Melia continues to fashion stylish, impressively-endowed Chateauneuf du Papes that possess richness, elegance, and complexity. I am still at a loss to explain why he is not represented by an American importer.Font du Loup's telephone number in France is 90.33.06.34; fax 90.33.05.47
