The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition offers an exuberant display of sweet black cherries, roasted herbs, seaweed, licorice, and pepper. Dark ruby, fleshy, and full-bodied, this is a beauty that is already alluring and seductive. It is a blend of 85% Grenache and the rest Syrah from 40-year-old vines, most of it aged in cement tank and the Syrah component aged in smaller barrels and demi-muids. Drink it over the next decade.
As I have indicated before, few appellations in France have as many women in prominent positions of power as does Chateauneuf du Pape. Here’s another such estate, in this case run by oenologist Helene Chouvet, that is making better and better wines with each new vintage.
