The 2009 Homenagem a Hans Christian Andersen (a.k.a. “HCA”) is all Syrah, another in the winery’s lineup, positioned between the regular Syrah and the Incognito. It’s my first look at this new entrant. Although the proliferation of Syrahs here has become a bit confusing, the treatment may be different and the terroirs may be different. Incognito, for example, always comes from a particular vineyard and gets 100% new French oak, says co-owner Carrie Jorgensen. This “HCA” is aged in all French oak, only about 50% new, whereas the regular Syrah is aged in used oak, a small portion of which is French. This is a little tighter and more focused early on than the regular Syrah reviewed this issue, with a little bit more of a gamey overlay as it airs out. It retains the sensibilities of the regular bottling in terms of elegance and brightness, though, and it drinks very well. There isn’t a lot to choose from, but I may have had a slight preference for this, for its more lingering finish if nothing else. It might separate itself a bit with age. In any event, it is quite a nice offering. There were 575 cases produced. Drink now-2018. Cortes de Cima’s regular entrants showed quite well this year, the 2009s proving to be a rather successful vintage there. When I first tasted these in Portugal, they didn’t show overly well.
