Lesec's Chateauneuf du Pape Les Galets Blonds (from an 80-year old La Crau parcel) is a gorgeous, classic offering characterized by notes of kirsch liqueur, garrigue, and pepper as well as enormous power and unctuosity. Produced from extremely old vines (93% Grenache and 7% Syrah), this 600-case cuvee is aged in both tank and old wood foudres. The 2000 reveals wonderful sweetness and voluptuousness in addition to oodles of kirsch liqueur, a texture the taster can get lost in, and a dense, full-bodied, opulent finish. The 900-bottle Chateauneuf du Pape Les Galets Blonds-Tonneaux is virtually impossible to find, but the fabulous 2000 is one of the vintage's superstars. Enormously powerful and unctuous, with flavors that never quit, it is a classic Chateauneuf du Pape that should hit its stride in 2007, and last until 2020+.
