The 2009 Rosso Piceno Superiore Vigna Monteprandone impresses for its solid core of dark fruit. It shows lovely density and richness, with hints of sweet spices, leather and leather that linger on the finish. This, too, is a touch on the rustic side, especially with regards to cooperage. The Monteprandone is 70% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese from the estate's oldest vines. It spent 18 months in French oak, 50% new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. Saladini Pilastri makes a wide range of delicious, value-priced wines. The reds in particular are worth note even if the 2009s aren't among the very finest wines I had had from the estate.Importers: Michelangelo Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 699-7021
