While I did not taste this estate’s top of the line Shiraz L’Oizeau, the 2002 Shiraz The Mad Hatter is knock-out stuff, exhibiting superb intensity as well as an inky/ruby/purple color and a fabulous perfume of melted licorice, creme de cassis, blackberries, flowers, and minerals. A great attack followed by an even more powerful, concentrated mid-palate and finish result in a multidimensional, complex Shiraz that can be drunk now, or cellared for 10-12+ years.
Hewitson is one of my favorite Barossa wineries for French-inspired, classic, intensely flavorful as well as elegant wines aged primarily in French oak.
