Avantis Estate Syrah

The 2008 Syrah was aged in large French oak barrels, 50% new, the rest second use, for 12 months. This is a lovely Syrah from Avantis, bright and solid, showing good structure, intensity and flavor. Some hints of game and a somewhat earthy character emerge with air, while it remains dominated by its crisp acidity early on. Yet, as it evolves, it becomes all about the fruit, although some oaky notes emerge as well. I think this will show well in another year or two. It is a nicely constructed Syrah that is also quite delicious. Early on, this seemed, if anything, better structured that the pricier "Collection" reviewed this issue, but the harder tannins at first attack are mostly a symptom of this being a little younger. It came around beautifully with an hour or so of air. Drink now-2020. Avantis is a family run boutique that makes small production wines. The first wine debuted in 1994. The 2007 SYRAH, aged in French oak, is quite nicely constructed, elegant in the mid-palate, bright and caressing in texture. There is a nice burst of flavor on the finish. The oak is reasonable, with notes of vanilla here and there, but the wine is sunny and has some power on the finish, the structure lending it a somewhat more serious air. Not particularly complex and rather straightforward, this is still quite charming and tons of fun. It is friendly and projects a laid back, easy going style on opening, but make no mistake—this is not a fruit bomb and with aeration it kept showing me more and more.
