The 2008 TLB, which is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Syrah, is a brilliant wine. Classic graphite/lead pencil shavings intermixed with creme de cassis, blackberry, cocoa, and smoke are all present in this dense purple-colored wine. Full-bodied, deep, and still very unevolved, this wine should settle down after another year or two in bottle and evolve for 10-15+ years. Two of the finest bargains year in and year out from California’s Central Coast are Beckman’s red Cuvee Le Bec and their more recent white, Le Bec Blanc. Both can probably be found for under $18 at discounters. I tasted four Syrahs from Beckman Vineyards, all of them meriting an outstanding score. This corroborates past performances over the last decade that Beckman is one of the best producers from Santa Ynez.Tel. (805) 688-8664; Fax (805) 688-9983
