The 2009 Syrah Clone #1 Purisima Mountain Vineyard is a huge, dark wine bursting with black fruit, smoke, tar and licorice. It shows fabulous intensity all the way through to the explosive, resonant finish, where hints of mocha, tar, menthol and espresso add the final layers of complexity. This big wine needs at least a few years in bottle to settle down, but it is hugely promising. The wine spent 14 months in French oak, 55% new. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. This is a fabulous set of wines from Beckmen Vineyards. I was especially impressed with the reds. Beckmen’s more limited offerings include the 2007 Syrah Clone #1 Purisima Mountain. Camphor, black raspberry, flower, and blackberry liqueur notes are found in this full-bodied, dense, chewy, classic Syrah. More similar to a northern Rhone Hermitage than its siblings, it should evolve for a decade or more. This winery, which has extensive holdings on one of Santa Ynez’s finest viticulture sites, Purisima Mountain, continues to build on an already impressive resume of wines.
