The 2008 Syrah Block Six Purisima Mountain Vineyard is the most massive and opulent wine in this lineup, but much of the wine’s richness has been achieved with some loss of varietal character, which is a shame. This is still a gorgeous wine, but it could have been truly special. It is quite clear that the level of the fruit here is first-class. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021. This is a fabulous set of wines from Beckmen Vineyards. I was especially impressed with the reds. The 2007 Syrah Block #6 Purisima Mountain exhibits abundant amounts of sweet blackberry fruit intermixed with barbecue smoke, crushed rocks, and acacia flowers. Beautifully textured, pure, long, and sexy, this is a broad, substantially flavored Syrah that should drink well for 8-10 years.This winery, which has extensive holdings on one of Santa Ynez’s finest viticulture sites, Purisima Mountain, continues to build on an already impressive resume of wines. Extraordinarily rich, a tremendous Syrah from this unique vineyard in the heart of the valley. Black in color and bone dry, it explodes in concentrated blackberry, blueberry, cassis, mocha, pepper and sandalwood flavors, but even more impressive is the tannic structure: so soft, intricate and silky.
