The ripe, heady and warm 2011 Jaun de Alzate Reserva is consistent with a very dry and warm year. It has plenty of dusty tannins that might require some food. 8,000 bottles produced.

The 2009 Jaun de Alzate Reserva is my favorite among the reds, showing a combination of the best of both worlds, with the concentration and power of the more modern wines and the finesse of the traditional ones. All elements seem to be in good balance, both in the nose and the palate. It is a wine to enjoy with food that delivers very good value. Drink 2014-2018. This 150,000-bottle family business is run by Loli Casado, the third generation of winegrowers in the Rioja Alavesa with a base of 25 hectares of vineyards in Lapuebla de Labarca and Laguardia, 45% of which were planted by her grandfather 60-80 years ago, 55% by her father and the remaining 10% were planted in 1999. In 2004, they built a new winery and increased the number of wines offered, which are produced in a clean, modern style and offered at very good prices. Various American importers, Cognac One, Spanish Vineyard Imports, Vitis Imports, Atlanta Improvement Company and Symposiums Brands.

The 2005 Jaun de Alzate Reserva is the same blend but selected from 60- to 80-year-old vines and then aged for 36-months in oak casks. It has a very fine, youthful bouquet of dark berry fruit, leather, dried herbs and a touch of Indian ink. The palate is silky and round on the entry with very fine tannins and superb cohesion. It has impressive poise towards the pure, sensual finish. This is an excellent Reserva that might be worth cellaring if you can resist its charms. Drink now-2022. Bodegas Loli Casado is a family-run winery that owns 25 hectares of vine in Alavesa, the oldest of which were planted more than 75-years ago. They produce a set of commendable wines and a couple of great ones under the “Jaun de Alzate” line. It is a shame that these are not presently imported into the United States. No known US importer.

Good, ripe, crushed berry fruit. Good, plummy, berry fruits, quite upfront, but good oak, good modern fruity Rioja.
