The 2008 Castell les Pinyeres has a lifted, high-toned almost honeyed nose that is little glossy. The palate is full-bodied, with bold, juicy tannins and “thick” black fruits that grip the palate. Bold and brassy in the mouth with fine purity, this sinewy Montsant will go nicely with a hearty dish. Drink now-2016. Celler El Masroig is Monstant’s largest co-operative. It was founded in 1917 between grape and olive growers and consists of 300 members who tend 500 hectares of vineyard. Winemaker Carles Esolar produces admirable wines that represent good value. The 2007 Castell de les Pinyeres is made up of 40% Samso, 40% Garnacha, and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Tempranillo aged in mainly French oak for 12 months. Aromas of cedar, spice box, tobacco, mineral, black cherry, and plum are followed by a savory wine with layered, spicy flavors, good volume, and a medium-long finish. Drink this excellent value over the next 3-4 years. Celler El Masroig is the largest cooperative winery in Montsant. The 2006 Castell de les Pinyeres is a blend of 40% Samso, 40% Garnacha, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark ruby-colored, it displays an enticing nose of mineral, damp earth, cassis, and cherry. Slightly austere on the palate currently, another year of bottle age should round it out. This medium-long effort will drink well from 2011 to 2016.
