The 2010 Finca El Puig, a blend of 50% Garnacha, 20% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Carinena, is my favorite of the lineup and displays abundant aromas of black fruit, vanilla and cinnamon over some forest floor notes (mushroom and truffles) with fine-grained tannins and balancing acidity in a medium to full-bodied palate. Drink now-2018. The winery, created in 1995 by Jose Manuel Fuentes, changed hands in 2004 and also expanded the wine range with some single-vineyard wines, which I found to be good but not outstanding. The 2009 Finca El Puig is a blend of 45% Garnacha, 25% Carinena, 15% Syrah and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 15 months in second-fill French oak. It exhibits prune-like, overripe scents on the nose, while the palate is very concentrated but rather smudged, akin to a wall of saturated, sweet ripe fruits crashing across the senses. It has a certain seductive, ostentatious appeal, but it is rather overbearing. Drink 2015-2022. Importer: Palm Bay International, FL; tel. (561) 362-9642

The compelling 2001 El Puig (a blend of 40% Grenache, 38% Carignan, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Syrah and Merlot) boasts great richness, aromatic complexity, and stature. Blue, red, and black fruits along with notions of liquid minerals, flowers, and toasty oak dominate this rich, impressively built 2001. Give it 2-4 more years of cellaring. The medium-bodied 2000 El Puig is an elegant, understated, restrained effort displaying mineral, flower, blueberry, and raspberry fruit characteristics. It needs to be drunk over the next 4-5 years.
