Rich and dry, with a melange of raspberry and cherry pie, cola, red licorice, bacon and sandalwood flavors, wrapped into firm but silky tannins. The vineyard is Foley’s, and whether or not it’s due to superior viticulture, this is the best of Flying Goat’s current trio of Pinots. It has the acidity to balance the ultraripe, almost sweet, cherry pie filling and cocoa flavors. Nice silky, elegant mouthfeel to this wine, with its practically nonexistent tannins but crisp acidity. It’s not quite ripe, offering a melange of cherry tomato, rhubarb and cola flavors in addition to deeper cherry ones, but it has complexity and style. ——S.H.(8/1/2005)—— 87
