A blend of 80% Garnacha and 20% Carinena aged in French oak, the 2010 Fresc has an extroverted, luscious bouquet with creme de cassis, dark plum and blueberry jam tinged with iodine and raisin. The palate is full-bodied and certainly packs an alcoholic punch. The black fruit is clean and focused; the finish quite linear with underlying firm, chalky tannins. It is a little monolithic at present, but it has the substance to age well over 5-6 years.
Genium Celler was formed in 2002 when six families pooled their resources. Together, they own 15 hectares of vine located in Poboleda, La Morera and Torroja, of which 3 hectares are farmed organically. The main focus is upon Garnacha and Carinena, complemented by Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. I found their wines to be unashamedly modern in style, generally well-crafted and for the most part, avoiding the overbearing nature and uncontained alcohol of some of their peers.
