The 1997 Cote du Soleil could be called a California-inspired Cotes du Rhone. The healthy dark ruby color is followed by berry, kirsch, peppery, and sweet fruit aromas, a lush, supple texture, good glycerin, and a heady finish. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by a black-cherry, cassis, peppery-scented nose, surprisingly rich, full-bodied, supple flavors, and a long, clean, rich finish. The good news ... the price; the bad news ... there were only 345 cases produced. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.
