The 2016 Syrah So Serine Rockpile Vineyard is just a baby with loads of youthful fruit—cassis, blueberry and boysenberry jam—with classic layers of cracked peppercorn, bacon fat, cast iron, tapenade and violet plus touches of warm chocolate, toasted coconut and sweet spices. Full-bodied, rich and dense, it explodes in the mouth with gobs of ripe black and blue fruits. It has a firm, ripe, grainy frame and good freshness, finishing very long and chocolaty. This is stunning and should age very well. 102 cases were made.

The 2015 Syrah So Serine Rockpile Vineyard is deep garnet-purple in color with amazing intensity of crushed blackberries, black cherries and warm plums with touches of Indian spices, violets, Provence herbs and charcuterie. The palate is full-bodied and exquisitely balanced offering fine-grained tannins and great freshness with a very long, multilayered finish. 100 cases produced.

I tasted three other spectacular Syrahs from Jeff Cohn and one profound Petite Sirah. The 2014 Syrah So Serine is 100% Syrah aged 16 months in 100% new French oak with 40% whole clusters. This comes from a suitcase clone from the great C?te-R?tie lieu-dit of Les Grandes Places. This flirts with perfection, an absolutely remarkable tour de force in winemaking with C?te-R?tie-like bacon fat, lard, spring flowers, cassis, blackberry and cherries. It is full-bodied, light on its feet, but super-intense, rich and an amazing wine. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

The last offering that I tasted from the Rockpile Vineyard is the 2013 Syrah So Serine Rockpile. I am not sure there was any Viognier co-fermented with this wine, as again the color is an opaque purple to the rim, but comparisons with a great C?te R?tie are not figments of one’s imagination. Extraordinary notes of violets and other flowers intermix with crème de cassis and blackberry, cutting a suave, velvety texture and stunning mouthfeel. This is C?te R?tie in Sonoma and a magnificent example of Cohn’s brilliance and Midas touch with this varietal. Although this is the most forward of all of these wines, and delicious already, it promises to evolve for at least a decade or more.

Another 100% Syrah offering is the 2011 Syrah So Serine Rockpile Vineyard. As black as a moonless night, it possesses lots of sweet black raspberry and blackberry fruit with a floral underpinning that made me think of the hillsides of Cote Rotie in the Northern Rhone Valley. The wine possesses good tannin, a slight deficiency in fat and charm on the mid-palate, but a beautifully pure and exciting style. It is a success in this problematic vintage.
