Inky in the glass, the 2017 Syrah Haley Rockpile Vineyard has bold scents of violet, tar, cassis and dried herbs with touches of menthol, milk chocolate and graphite. The full-bodied palate is dense and rich with a grainy frame and just enough freshness, finishing perfumed. Give it more time in bottle. 308 cases produced.

The 2016 Syrah Haley Rockpile Vineyard has an opaque purple-black color and bursts from the glass with intense violet and wildflower aromas, slowly overtaken by dark chocolate, toasted coconut, graphite and cast iron with a savory current of cured meats and savory herbs and a core of cassis and warm blue fruits. The full-bodied palate explodes with perfumed fruits supported by amazingly ripe, pixelated tannins and juicy freshness, finishing very long and layered. Unbelievable! This still needs plenty of time to show its best, so forget it for a while. 317 cases produced.

The 2015 Syrah Haley Rockpile Vineyard is medium to deep garnet-purple in color with compelling scents of violets, wilted roses, kirsch and baking spices over a core of wild blueberries and black cherries with wafts of lavender, garrigue and wild thyme. Full-bodied, opulent and possessing a myriad of floral and spicy sparks in the black-fruited mouth, it has a beautiful plush texture and wonderful freshness, finishing very long. 232 cases produced.

The 2014 Syrah Haley from Rockpile, is 100% Syrah aged 16 months in different sized French barrels. Thirty percent whole clusters were used. This is more structured, mineral-dominated and masculine than the So Serine, which is a quintessential, elegant, feminine, but super-rich style of Syrah. This is also rich, but more virile, backward and needing several years of bottle age. This full-bodied classic should drink well for 10-15 years and readers should approach it like they would an Hermitage from France’s Northern Rh?ne Valley.

The 2013 Syrah Haley Rockpile is one of them. Inky opaque/purple in color, the wine has incredible sweet blackberry richness, a beautiful floral note, and that crushed-rock minerality that seems to be part of this AVA. The flavor intensity is mind-boggling, the purity, texture and length exquisite. This is another prodigious tour de force from Jeff Cohn that should drink well for at least 10-15 years.
