The more opulent and fleshy 2009 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes reveals elevated levels of tannin along with some good, sweet fruit. However, the tannins seem to be out of proportion to the depth of the wine’s fruit and overall density. (Not yet released)Well-known negociant Patrick Lesec, whose collection of high quality southern Rhone wines has always been somewhat under consumers’ radar, seems to be cutting back on the number of offerings he produces. His finest vintages to date have been 2007, 2005 and some early years such as 2000 and 2001. His 2009s are all very good efforts, but perhaps less impressive than the previously mentioned vintages. Nevertheless, there are some top bargains to be had in Lesec’s portfolio. Composed of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, the deep ruby/purple-tinged 2007 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes displays classic aromas of roasted Provencal herbs, lavender, and garrigue, a big, full-bodied, muscular, rich, fleshy mouthfeel, and a long finish. It should evolve for at least a decade. The stars in Patrick Lesec’s porfolio are the superb Chateauneuf du Pape cuvees he fashions, but there are also some stunning bargains for shrewd consumers. The 2006 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes. A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, it exhibits a Provencal-like nose of roasted herbs, licorice, kirsch, and cedar. Fleshy and chunky with loads of fruit, it will provide enjoyment over the next 7-8 years. Patrick Lesec continues to make a fine name for his negociant blends from the southern Rhone. The classic 2005 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah. It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color along with a big, peppery, cassis, licorice, and roasted herb-scented bouquet. This elegant, noble, deep wine should age nicely for 7-8 years.
