Poggio al Tesoro's 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Il Seggio makes a great jump forward in quality and intensity with this vintage. Named after the little river Seggio that runs through the estate's vineyards, this is a blend of 50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. The wine reveals soft, ripe cherry fruit with lots of plush texturing at the back. The tannins are tame and the wine spreads evenly over the palate. Also impressive is the wine's 160,000-bottle production number.

The 2017 Bolgheri Rosso Il Seggio is mostly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in descending order of importance. Il Seggio is a terrific red wine that fully embraces the spirit of Bolgheri, interpreted with both purity and a more accessible style. From a hot vintage, the wine offers dark fruit and generous blackberry with balanced spice, tar and tobacco, great for some braised beef. The tannins are a touch dry and astringent, giving the wine a harsher edge in terms of mouthfeel. Some 120,000 bottles were made.

There is a lot of meat on the bones of the 2016 Bolgheri Rosso Il Seggio. The wine opens to spice and bramble with dark fruit nuances, surrounded by thick layers of spice, tobacco, tar and resin. This wine offers a specific and unique mouthful that is full and dense but also creamy and luscious. It makes a particularly glossy or shiny impact in terms of mouthfeel. The blend is 40% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. Some 100,000 bottles were made.

Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and some Petit Verdot make up the 2015 Bolgheri Rosso Il Seggio. The blend is aged in barrique, of which 70% is second-passage oak. Merlot is the largest part of the blend at 40%, and it is the grape you taste with the greatest distinction, especially in this warm vintage. The fruit comes from a vineyard site with strong iron content and other metals that add to the minerality of the wine. Il Seggio is the name of the river that brings these soil elements down from the hills. Indeed, there is a note of rusty nail on the close.

Here is a new wine from Marilisa Allegrini's Poggio Al Tesoro property on the Tuscan Coast. The 2014 Bolgheri Rosso Il Seggio makes a compelling presentation for an easy and fresh-drinking wine. This is an accessible and immediately likable Tuscan blend that delivers aromas of black cherry, blackberry, spice and tobacco. There is plenty of primary fruit to keep the mouthfeel moist, soft and succulent. Sweet fruit appears on the mid-weight finish. This is a good near-term drinking option.
