Medium ruby, the 2015 Syrah Melville Vineyard gives up tons of floral perfume—violet and dried lilac—with cracked black pepper, prosciutto, warm blackberries, bitter chocolate, warm black cherries, savory olive, salted licorice and red fruit sparks. Medium to full-bodied, it's more red fruited in the mouth with some salty tang, chewy tannins and wicked freshness, finishing long, energetic and savory. Very unique!

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2014 Syrah Melville Vineyard reveals some apparent stem inclusion at this youthful stage, giving way to a very pretty perfume of spice box and violets over a core of warm blackberries, black cherries and plums, plus pepper and licorice wafts. Medium-bodied with a beautifully fine-crafted, elegant palate, it has intense black fruit, spice and licorice layers and a firm frame, finishing with lingering pepper and earth suggestions. Leave it a year for the stems to marry-in and drink it over the next 10-12+.

Violets, plums, incense and potpourri all emerge from the full-bodied, supple and downright sexy 2013 Syrah Melville Vineyard. Lifted, perfumed and complex, with no hard edges, it's certainly the most approachable and textured of the Syrahs from Chad. Drink it anytime over the coming 7-8 years. This release saw one-third whole clusters and the standard two years in neutral barrels.

Another sensational Syrah from Chad, the 2012 Syrah Melville Vineyard got a big "Wow" in the notes. Loaded with notions of black raspberries, cassis, crushed violets, rose petal and smoked game, it has terrific concentration, a voluptuous, sexy texture and a great finish. Delivering both complexity and decadence, I'm a huge fan and would drink bottles over the coming 5-7 years, although I wouldn't be surprised to see it hold for longer either. It saw 33% stems during fermentation and two years all in neutral oak. At this level of quality, it's a killer value.

In the same ballpark, the 2011 Syrah Melville offers loads of spice, white pepper and herbs to go with more olive, game and darker berry fruit. There’s a touch of green here, but it’s reasonably well managed, and it has medium-bodied richness and good texture. I wouldn’t push this and would enjoy bottles over the coming 3-4 years. This is another impressive lineup by Chad Melville. His 2011s show the difficulty of the vintage, yet still deliver loads of character and are beautifully made.
