A blend of Garnacha and Cari?ena, the 2013 Bancal is an unoaked red with a fruit-driven nose with something wild that made me think of the Swiss mountains and the wild herbs and slightly vegetal, rustic character of Valais wines. Blends seem to have changed this year. While the technical sheet says it's a mixture of Garnacha and Cari?ena there is a mention of Syrah on the back label, and the aromas tend to confirm the presence of this Rh?ne grape. Half of the wine matured in barrels for six months while the rest stayed in stainless steel and clay amphorae which seems like a nice balance. It comes through as quite juicy and fresh, with a pinch of spices. A pleasant young red.

The 2012 Bancal del Bosc is 70% Garnacha with the balance composed of Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, which is still very young and feels fruit-driven with ripe notes of black raspberries, hints of jam and abundant spicy aromas. The palate reveals a subtle, juicy and pleasure-inciting wine, quite primary, that is drinking well now, but should develop more complexity with time. Drink now-2018. Vinyes Domenech is one of the up-and-coming new names of Montsant. The company is named after its organically farmed, 15-hectare property and is quite ecological-minded, as 90% of electricity used is from renewable sources and all their water comes from rain and other natural sources. Of course, all this would be just an anecdote if their wines were not very good. The vineyards are spread in different terraces (bancales) where the predominant soil is argilo-calcareous. The 2010 Blancal del Bosc is a blend of 60% Garnacha, 20% Syrah and 20% Cabernet from 40-year-old vines planted on red clay and limestone and aged for six months in three-year-old French oak. It has a well-defined nose with notes of mulberry, dark cherry, a touch of lavender and slate. The palate is medium-bodied, with ripe, mineral-rich tannins on the entry. This is beautifully defined and focused, with a reserved finish that offers tantalizing glimpses of limestone and flint. It is very refined and composed. Drink 2013-2020. The 2009 Bancal (another word for terrace) is made up of 60% Garnacha, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Syrah aged for 6 months in seasoned French and American oak. Game, mineral, violets, black cherry, and blueberry aromas inform the nose of this layered, supple wine. Succulent on the palate and relatively forward, it can be approached now but will drink well for another 5-6 years. Vinyes Domenech, founded in 2002, is a 42 acre estate with a cooler, drier site than most vineyards in the Montsant DO with all of the wines produced from organically grown grapes .
